Sundays

I'm being asked a lot about my new job. Like any new thing, while skills are generally transferable, there is a lingo learning curve, such as, the nano does not refer to the Apple ipod mini shuffle, rather the Bible printed on a micro chip. Who knew? Consider this as your next gift from the Holy land! I'm serious.

Let's talk about Sundays. The workweek here goes Sunday through Thursday with Fridays off. For the first time in my professional career I reviewed a vacation policy where Jewish holidays are all listed. Often I've heard of Americans missing Sunday. It was actually really nice on Friday to cook for Shabbat and have time to relax. What was hard was sitting at work on Sunday, discussing a Monday meeting and thinking, wait, isn't today Monday? The workweek feels slightly longer with the days still confused. But I enjoy and don't miss the afternoon Friday rush back in the States. Israel lives and breathes Jewish culture and tradition. The other day was our 1-month aliyahversary but feelings like this are yet to drill into our head.

I'm sitting now on the 14 bus, a 10-15 commute to the new office. Sunday we planted trees or saw trees that were planted by the gracious donations of Christians, Evangelicals. Monday we met a client that represents one of the Israel Defense Forces unit and efforts Christians are involved in to support the army. It was truly fascinating to sit in a meeting half Hebrew speaking and half English speaking. I never considered the laws the IDF would have regarding marketing, but it all made absolute sense. Yesterday I was introduced to one of my projects involving an Orthodox Rabbi who has an interest in teaching the Bible to Christians and becoming an expert in the area. Later at night I researched and prepared additional questions to ask him for video sessions. As I read an article in the Jerusalem Post of extremists that would not allow Christians to enter King David's tomb I couldn't help but remember my father's love of archaeology, history and internal conflict. I'm sure he would have had so much to say about my new job and would have been a helpful resource.

It honestly never occurred to me to delve into Jewish-Christian relationships and walking the kids to camp this morning, they told me mommy has a very important job and I have to get used to it.

In more ways than one!
