Purging

"Ima, why are you getting rid and selling things?" my son asked sheepishly this morning.

Yesterday I had posted the sled (photographed earlier in this blog with their sweet faces) along with firewood and tools for our fireplace. Funny to think, but we won't be needing that in Israel. And I had always wanted a house with a fireplace -- very American.

Our realtor dropped by earlier in the day to take a look at what needs to be rearranged for staging. Luckily only a few tweaks.Sitting in the alcove of our living room, we both seemed to take in the magnitude of what's going on and the transition ahead. The cute little playhouse (see below) also sold the very next day. A little bit of stress arises too -- there's a lot going on. A baby hopefully soon any day, getting ready for Pessach, clearing up the yard, figuring out what not to take and clear out what we can with this in mind and the open house when we go live on MLS.

I had trouble sleeping at night, anticipating photos of what the next place we move to will look like. Checking WhatsApp the minute I woke up, we had received a string of photographs. Tile floors, Israeli shutters, stone stairs, a kitchen with two sinks but much less character than our Sharon kitchen (I am told these are called "basic kitchens"), a backyard with a view of clearly a construction site and rooms without closets. The song with the verse "אני בניתי בית בארץ ישראל" pops into my head, though we ourselves didn't build this house. I take mental note how this place will likely be for one year and not to fill it up, in anticipation for the next move, which hopefully will be longer term. And if we build it, it needs closets!

The kids are excited. We don't share with them the photographs, though after breakfast, both of us received a running squeeze from our daughter with a shriek "we're moving to Beit Shemesh!" Their excitement makes it much easier to realize that new memories will be made and they'll remember the former as well. And that in itself helps keep tears away.

This gives me hope that we won't mess them up with such a big leap. We will find ourselves indeed, on a journey.
